“Learner Profile: “Mo”
I meet a classmate today. Her name is Mo. She had already graduated from her high school in China. However, she hasn’t attended any colleges, and she didn’t have work.
Mo has lived in New York about ten months since she came to the United States. When she was a child, she started to study English. For her, grammar is easy to learn. On the other hand, vocabulary is the most difficult part for her. She would like to work with classmates, and she prefers to write. She doesn’t like to read in English. The only language that she likes to read is her first language.
This semester, Mo wishes to improve her speaking and listening.

In the article “Why Are Children Becoming Obese?”, David Kraft talks about why children become obese. He states that many children become obese because of many reasons. First of all, more children are overweight because of their eating habits. Eating a lot of junk foods and snacks can effect children’s health and make them fat. Another reason why children are getting obese is that many kids do not do exercise. They spend a lot of time focusing on watching TV, playing video games, and sitting in front of a computer. In addition, children who have overweight problems probably relate to their parents’ bad eating and exercise habits. Finally, sleep is the most important factor for children. Getting enough sleep every night helps to decrease their overweight problems.

Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity has become a serious problem in recent years. The article “Local Governments Seek to Reduce Obesity in Kids” cites research that shows thirty percent children who are obese instead of the average of eighteen percent in the United States. First of all, many children become obese because they eat a lot of junk foods and snacks. They also do not do exercise because they spend a lot of time watching TV, playing video games and sitting in front of a computer. In addition, parents’ bad dietary habits can play a role of overweight problems in their children. Children who get too much or too little sleep can also become fat. Furthermore, obesity includes the environment in their mother’s womb, or some chemicals in the environment. As a result, obese children have many physical, social and psychological problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and heart disease. They also have lower self-esteem and stigmatization. This essay will describe proposed solutions to the problem of childhood obesity. Finally, this essay will propose the best solution and explain the problems of another solution.
One way to prevent childhood obesity is fining the parents of obese children. According to the article “Experts ‘Appalled’ by Puerto Rican Bill to Fine Parents of Obese Children”, a Puerto Rican Senator names Gilberto Rodriguez, has proposed a law that fines parents who have obese children in order to reduce obesity. For instance, schools create a diet and exercise plan to the obese children, and check them every four weeks. If obese children do not lose weight after six months, their parents would be fined up to five hundred dollars. If they still do not show significant weight loss after another six months, the fines could increase to eight hundred dollars.
Another way to reduce childhood obesity is to change children’s eating habits and activities. According to an internet article “Children’s Health” on WEBMD, many children are obese because of their eating habits and exercise from their family. Therefore, parents should plan family activities that provide everyone with exercise, such as swimming, biking, or running. They should also teach their children to eat healthy foods, like vegetables and fruits. In this point, the parents should offer more nutrition foods to their children. In addition, schools should educate the children to eat healthier. They should not offer soda and snacks machines. Finally, the family should makes an effort to reduce the amount of time spending in sedentary activities, such as watching TV, or playing video game.
In my opinion, I strongly believe that eating healthy foods and doing exercise are the best solutions to reduce childhood obesity because there are many problems with the first solution. According to Ted Kyle, in the article “Local Government Seek to Reduce Obesity in Kids”, he says that the proposal in Puerto Rico has a serious problem which is that people who are obese tend to have a lower socioeconomic status. Then, he states, “People are already suffering because of obesity.” He mentions that this proposal does not work. Nikhil Dhurandhar in the article “Experts ‘Appalled’ by Puerto Rican Bill to Fine Parents of Obese Children” also shows a great deal of disagreement about this proposal. He says, “What’s next? Will they be fining parents of children suffering from other diseases? May be diabetes? May be cancer? May be something else?” He points out that this proposal is unfair to the parents. Another researcher names Rebecca Puhl, states that this proposal is very unfair and punishes the parents. She also mentions, “Childhood obesity is a very complex issue.” The fines on parents are pretty harmful than supportive, and this proposal “drastically oversimplify obesity.” On the other hand, eating healthy foods and doing more exercises can help children to lose weight. When I studied in elementary school, I was extremely fat because I ate a lot of snacks and got too much sleep every weekend. After my parents encouraged me to run and do push-up every day, I began losing weight slowly. Now I keep doing exercise during the weekend.

Happiness
Happiness is the most common feeling in human society. Being happy can make people successful in their lives. As we saw in the film Happy by Roko Belic in class, a traveller named Roko Belic, “has explored human happiness through interviews with people from all walks of life in fourteen different countries, weaving in the newest findings of positive psychology.” This film cites research that claims “happiness” is 50% genetic, 10% circumstances, and 40% “intentional activity”. For instance, about 50% of people’s happiness tends to come from their heredity; only 10% from their environment; and 40% from their personal experience. Overall, this essay will connect the topic to the life of a remarkable woman named Susan. In addition, it will connect to my experience. Finally, this essay will establish my significant goal for the future.
According to the film Happy, “happiness” is 50% genetic, 10% circumstances, 40% “intentional activity”. This relates to the life of Susan Spencer-Wendel in Until I Say Good-Bye. It is a memoir about how Susan spent her rest of the life after she got ALS. I think Susan would disagree with the claim because she must balance these three aspects in her own life. Firstly, after Susan opened the letter from a social worker, she knew about Ellen, her biological mother’s information. When she looked at the photos, she realized that she had the same character traits as Ellen. At that moment, she was quite happy because she had confirmed Ellen’s identity that Ellen was her biological mother. However, one thing that made Susan disappointed was ALS. This disease caused Susan to lose her muscles. She could not speak and had many problems with her physical activities. This pushed Susan into despair. She wanted to commit suicide. While she was considering death, she thought of her three children and her husband. She realized that if she died, it would bankrupt her family. She also realized that she did not have much time remaining in her life. Therefore, Susan made a “bucket list” and followed it. She quit her journalist job. She also wrote a book Until I Say Good-Bye to plant her memories. In Susan’s book, she traveled to many countries with her family and her best friend named Nancy. While traveling with Nancy, Susan went to Yukon territories to see the Northern Lights. She also went to Wreck Beach. As we can see, Susan predominantly described her intentional activities about happiness.
As the film claims, “happiness” is composed of 50% genetic, 10% circumstances, and 40% “intentional activity”. However, I think happiness mostly focuses on our circumstances and intentional activities. I came to the United States five years ago, and my life was totally changed. I had to work hard to make my life better, and I had to adapt to the circumstances in this new country. Then, my uncle sent me to school. When I attended school for the first year, it was hard for me to adapt to the classes because my English was not very good. I failed English class every semester. However, during the last year of my school, I studiously reviewed my English. Finally, I graduated from school. In addition, during the summer in my country, I went fishing with my cousins. Every day we caught different kind of fishes. It made me enjoyed because we ate some delicacy and earned some money. As we can see, happiness mainly focuses on our circumstances and our intentional activities.
In the future, I hope I can help people who are suffering in difficult situations in the following years. According to Federal Emergency Management Agency, Hurricane Sandy damaged over thousands of houses in 2012. It forced many survivors into shelters. As a result, many people in the United States lost their lives. After this event occurred, I suddenly realized that many people were suffering under Hurricane Sandy. They did not have a house, or resources. Most tragically, they lost their relatives. After that, I would like to make a group at first. Then, I will lead my members to carry the resources such as water, foods, and clothes to support people in shelters. Moreover, we will encourage the victims to be stronger and optimistic. After they improve their lives, I will be happy because their situations make me feel miserable. I have responsibility to help them. As we can see, helping others can lead to happiness.
In my opinion, life is like a rollercoaster. We need to devote our love and power to help people conquering their obstacles. Simply, helping others, directly leads to “random acts of kindness”.

Birth Order
Both articles are about how birth order effects a child’s personality and marriage. In the article “How Your Birth Order Influences Your Life Adjustment”, Lucille K. Forer writes that the oldest child tends to be parental when his siblings arrive. He thinks that he can be more “capable and adequate” than other siblings. Moreover, the oldest child expects other people to be less capable. Next, Pamela Withers, in the article “Born for Each Other”, also states that the oldest child carries many parental qualities. As a result, he may become a “perfectionist”. However, he may be slow to make friends. Withers suggests that the youngest and the only child might be the best match. On the other hand, the worst match is another oldest child. Withers also mentions that the oldest sister matches well with a youngest brother whom she can “lead and nurture”. In addition, the oldest brother tends to be “easygoing, fun-loving, considerate”, and takes good care of women. He is a good match with a youngest sister. Overall, I agree with both Forer and Withers’s idea because I am the oldest child in my family. For instance, when I accompany with my youngest sister, I try to take care of her and protect her. Sometimes I provide good things to her. Furthermore, I try to do my best to comfort her when she is gloomy. In the future, I also wish to find a spouse who is younger than me, so that I can treat her well.

Love
Love is a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. Some people are more successful in their relationships because they have the qualities that is essential to loving relationships. These qualities contain good communication, affection, compassion, forgiveness, honesty, acceptance, dependability, and a sense of humor patience and freedom. All of these qualities can lead to a successful loving relationship whether the relationship is between a couple, a parent and child, other relatives, or friends. Some psychologists believe that love comes from people who get along with each other for a period of time. In some situations, many people may do something for another although it is dangerous. In the story "The Lion's Hair", because the wife wanted to make her marriage better with her husband, she went to bring the lion's hair for a cure. This shows how much the wife loved her husband. Even though she knew that she would die, she did it constantly because she really loved her husband. At last, the determination of love between people can also leads to a successful loving relationship.

Friendship
According to Seneca, “Friendship always benefits; love sometimes injures.” In other words, friendship is always helpful to people. It leads people to success. However, love sometimes hurts people in a serious way. Most tragically, it may push people to death. I disagree with his statement because friendship is not always beneficial, sometimes it can be harmful to people. Love also can be helpful. This essay will describe the disadvantage of friendship. Finally, this essay will describe how love helps people to success.
Seneca states, “Friendship always benefits.” In this part of the statement, he believes that friendship always helps people to become successful. For instance, after two people become friendly, they tend to help each other very often when both of them are in trouble. They also accept each others’ weaknesses. In addition, friends can share his or her deepest feelings with each other. Finally, friendship helps people to realize that others have the same needs after they discuss with each other. On the other hand, friendship might end because people have different views on issues. When I watched the soccer game with my friend in my house, I supported the United States team, and he supported the Italian team. While we were watching it, I saw a member of the Italian team violate the rule. I yelled at him. However, my friend said that it was fine. After we argued about this debate for a moment, I was quite angry because it was unfair. Finally, I kicked him out of my house, and I refused to allow him to come to my house. In this case, we both had different opinions toward the game. Although I agreed with my friend, our friendship would not hold so long because I thought that the reality doesn’t support his position.
Seneca also mentions that love sometimes hurts people. First of all, people fail in loving relationships because they do not trust each other. Both of them seem to have secrets that they hide from each other. Moreover, jealousy will also destroy a loving relationship. For example, when a couple comes out to take a walk, and the husband concentrates on the other beautiful woman, then the wife will be angry at him because she thinks that the husband does not pay attention to her. In contrast, love mostly gives people a sense of caring, understanding, support, and hope. As I read in the story “The Lion’s Hair”, I suddenly realize that a determination to a person can illustrate whether this person loves another or not. This story is about a young woman and a young man who fell in love and became a couple. After a period of time, they began to have conflict with each other over a little thing. The wife wanted to improve her relationship with her husband. Then she relied on an old man for help. The old man asked the wife to bring the lion’s hair to him. The wife shivered out of fear, but in the end she still got the hair from the lion. This reminds me that if a person really loves another, he can do anything for her even if it is dangerous.
As Seneca said, “Friendship always benefits; love sometimes injures.” In my opinion, I think friendship sometimes harms people when they have different perspectives over an issue. Simply, love can also be helpful to people. It helps people to visualize whether or not they truly love. Overall, I strongly recommend that trust and acceptance can make friendship deeper. In addition, having good communication with others and being honest will lead to a successful loving relationship.

CAT-W Practice
According to the article, there are several evidence shows the positive impact of aerobic activity. First of all, Charles Hillman, a professor of Kinesiology at the University of Illinois, states that children who have "just 20 minutes of walking" before a test can make their scores higher. In addition, a years-long Swedish Study finds that better fitness is associated with higher I.Q. 's. Georg Kuhn also explains that "aerobic exercise can produce specific growth factors and proteins in the brain" that make people intelligent. Finally, Mr. Kuhn suggests young people do more aerobic exercise. By comparing the effect of running and playing video games, Mr. Hillman realizes that running improves test scores quickly while playing video games does not. Although doing exercise can make children smart, reviewing notes every day can also make children as an intelligence.
I agree with Charles Hillman that doing exercise can make children's test scores higher. When I studied in my high school, I was frustrated about my test scores because I did not know the answer. After having a conference with my teacher, I realized that I had test anxiety. He suggested that I do exercise before a test began, or even took a walk. However, I did not like to do exercise because I was lazy as a snake, but I wanted to improve my test scores, so I tried to take a walk for five minutes before the test began. During the test, I got some ideas to answer all of the questions. Finally, I got a pretty excellent score on the test. Right now, I begin doing exercise fluently. After that event, I realize that doing exercise can make me think something more clear. It also makes my brain more creative and think more wider.
Some people might believe that reviewing notes can develop their test scores. In China, many professors in the University suggest students to take notes on their textbooks. After that, students can review their notes with the original article. When they take a test about that article, they will memoirize all the notes of that article and get the answers. Moreover, in the United States, many teachers expect their students to practice their notes. For instance, most teachers want students to take notes every day. After one day, teachers will ask students to do several activities about what they had learned before. After that, they keep doing the same thing again. When the students take the test, they will remember all the questions which they had practiced before. Overall, students will get the excellent test scores no matter which way they use to review notes.
In conclusion, it is important to develop the test scores with reviewing notes every day. Students can mark their notes on their textbooks, or they can practice their notes every day. However, if they do not follow either way to do, it will lowers their test scores.

According to the article "Helping College Graduates Find Jobs", some changes influence college education in several towns in Wisconsin. Many college students want to make sure that they will get a job after graduation. However, they are confused about "what kinds of jobs they want," and they often change their majors. Therefore, students wish to get some advice about choosing their majors. Moreover, the state's accountants have the same problem. First of all, they think that the state wastes money on college students who do not graduate or change majors. In addition, the state "hopes to get an additional return on financial aid investment" because they expect students to get financial aid in order to graduate, and then they will have "successful, taxpaying" lives. Fitz also describes many solutions that the state government and several community colleges provide for the students and the accountants. First of all, they give students some tests to measure their academic skills. Then they consider students' environment and determine what kinds of jobs the society needs. Finally, the state government will only give financial aid to students who have majors that lead to job market. Although college students need to take tests to determine their academic skills in order to get financial aid for their majors, learning remedial courses can also help students to improve their study skills in order to get financial aid.
I agree with part of Fitz's idea that the state government should give students some tests to determine their academic skills. When I was a senior in my high school, the college wanted me to take a placement test in order to measure my study skills. I asked my academic adviser why I needed to take that test. He explained that the state government did not want to waste money on college students who do not graduate. After having a conversation with him, I realized that money was important. It was only given to students who would find better jobs in the future and paid money back to the government for other students. As Fitz mentions that the state accountants do not want to waste money to support the involved students, so students need to work hard to make successful lives.
However, there are some ideas that Fitz does not discuss. The state government in Wisconsin can suggest that many community colleges create remedial courses for those students who get low grades in their academic courses. In New York, there are nine community colleges which have remedial courses for students to study English. Because the state government worries that students who have a low GPA or do not graduate from college will waste money on financial aid, it prepares some remedial courses such as CLIP and CUNY Start. Those programs do not spend financial aid to support. They also help students to save their financial aid that prepare for their majors.
In conclusion, there are many solutions that the state government can offer for the students to improve their basic skills and get financial aid for success. In order to save financial aid, the state government can create some tests for college students to measure their English level. Finally, the state government can order all community colleges to provide some remedial courses for students who have low grades in their academic courses and those who fail the placement test. Therefore, the state's accountants will get the tax return on financial aid. College students will also get financial assistance to graduate. Before getting financial aid, students need to make an extraordinary effort and decide their majors in order to make a successful life.

According to the article "What is Quality of Life" by Francisco Orozco, many people have different perspectives about their quality of life. Orozco begins by talking about his experience of staying in a town in Southern Mexico. He knows that quality of life is mainly focused on material goods. However, after he sees neighbors living in this town happily, he realizes that people who live in a developing country seem to be more happy than people living in a developed country. Orozco also describes that developing countries have some disadvantages such as "poor-quality roads and hospitals". Furthermore, a "higher standard of living" gives people a comfortable life. On the other hand, it influences people's safety. As a result, it leads to a poor spiritual quality of life which means that people who live in this society will have higher pressure and become more scared. Although material goods improve people's lives, I believe that people who live in developed countries are more focused on their spiritual side of life.
I agree with a part of the article that explains that a well developed environment can make people's lives more comfortable. In Africa, some people are hungry. They do not have foods to eat and drink. Moreover, they do not have developed machines to hunt. Most tragically, Africa spreads out many terrible diseases, and those diseases cause Africans to die. Therefore, they need material goods to fill their quality of life.
Many people who live in developed countries might think that the spiritual side of life is more important than material goods. When I moved to the United States, I did not have enough money to buy something I want. Therefore, I preferred to work hard to improve my life. Now I have my own place to live and buy whatever I want. However, I do not feel happy because I have left my friends so far. I will not be able to play with them. After I satisfied my dream, I realized that the most happy thing was to play with my friends no matter how poor I was. As Orozco mentions, many people who have a higher standard of living tend to be more concentrated on their spiritual side of life.
In conclusion, people who live in different situations have different points of view about their quality of life. Some people think that they need to have more technology and medical services to support. However, other people think that the spiritual side of life is more important because they can have fun with other people even though they are poor. Finally, material goods are necessary for people to survive. Spiritual fulfillment is also important for life to be happy.

Midterm Reflection Essay
We have done a lot of things this semester. First of all, we finished reading our book Until I Say Good-Bye. In addition, we participated in many Common Read events. Then, we practiced our reading skill and writing skill. Finally, we studied a lot of vocabulary and grammar. In this reflection essay, I will describe what I have learned so far this semester, and what I would like to improve in the second half of the semester.
This semester our class participated in the QCC Campus Common Read. Begin, we read the book Until I Say Good-Bye by Susan Spencer-Wendel. This book was about a remarkable woman named Susan struggled to find a cure for her disease: A.L.S. However, she chose to give up because there was no cure for A.L.S. Susan changed her plan. She decided to make a “Bucket List” and followed it. She also wrote the book Until I Say Good-Bye to plant her memory. Finally, Susan enjoyed the rest of her life with her family and her friends. Next, I attended many Common Read events that came up with our theme “A Life Well Live”. Moreover, these events conducted some research that related to our book. In the first week, I watched the film Pay it Forward by Mimi Leder. I also participated in an academic lecture “Leaving Yourself Behind: Attaining Higher-Level Empathy and Understanding” by Dr. Anthony Monahan. In the second week, I attended a guest speaker: Valerie Estess, Co-Founder, project ALS. The last week I attended a nursing presentation and guest speakers: Katie Bittner and Shirley Mondesir, Staff RNS at North Shore University Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. In particular, I was more interested in the academic lecture “Leaving Yourself Behind: Attaining Higher-Level Empathy and Understanding”. This lecture was about how empathy influenced people’s lives. In this lecture, Dr. Anthony Monahan discussed different kinds of empathy. First of all, empathy separated into global, egocentric, situational, transformational, and othering. In addition, there were three levels of empathy: egocentric empathy, situational empathy, and transformational empathy. Finally, he mentioned that Mirror Neurons (Biological Basic Empathy) could send messages to our emotional system in our brain.
In addition to participating in the Common Read, we studied our reading skill and writing skill. We also practiced a lot of vocabulary and grammar. Sometimes we went to the Computer Lab to conduct research. This semester, I thought my writing has improved a lot. When I began studying in this class, my writing contained many mistakes. Sometimes the whole essay was not relevant. After a few weeks, my writing seemed to be improved. Right now, my essay almost filled with good comments. However, my reading was terrible because every passage was too long that I could not understand what it was about, and it contained a lot of academic vocabulary. I thought that I needed to read more articles and practiced more vocabulary exercises to improve my reading.
The second half of the semester will focuses more on reading skill. I will like to begin studying how to write a CAT-W essay. When I am outside of school, I will try to speak English fluently. For the second half of the semester, I will challenge myself to do more works. I wish all of the skills will be improved and even developed at the end of the semester. After this semester, I am going to take the Placement test. I will do my best to pass the test and go straight to English 101.

Interview Essay
Sometimes rules that guide people’s behavior differ from one culture to another, and sometimes the rules are similar. In the United States, the golden rule is “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In other words, respect others as you will get respect from them. The Chinese golden rule is “There is no respect for others without humility in one’s self.” This also means how to treat others in harmony. This essay will describe how a married couple respect each other in privacy. In addition, it will describe how they respect each other without racism. Finally, this essay will focus on how people learn the golden rule.
Many couples respect each other’s privacy in both China and the United States. First of all, they will not ask each other about their personal possession. For example, when I questioned my mother whether or not my father asked her about her possessions after they married, my mother said that he did not ask her about those things. My mother claimed that personal possession was her privacy. She did not have to tell my father how much she exactly had. Likewise, many American couples also have the same situation as Chinese couples. Two days ago, I interviewed an American couple. The wife said that she never asked her husband about his possessions. When I questioned the husband what he thought about telling his wife of his possessions, he stated, “If she asks me how much I own right now, it means that she does not trust me.” Moreover, they will not ask each other where to go unless one of them stays outside overnight. Yesterday, my father came back so late at night. I asked my mother whether she suspected my father or not. However, my mother said that she believed him. She also told me that each other should have their private space. In the United States, many couples will not ask each other about their whereabouts because they believe each other. However, if one of them checks another, that means he or she does not respect another’s privacy.
In both countries, many couples respect each other because there are no racisms between them. In China, many parents expect their daughter to marry a rich spouse. Most women also approve with them. However, some of them do not want to follow their parents’ instruction. They choose to marry a poor spouse because they really love him. In addition, they do not care whether other part is rich or poor. Finally, they just want to marry someone they really love. In this case, many couples respect each other because they accept each other. In the same way, many American white families want their next generation to marry people who have the same race as them. In contrast, most people do not agree them because they think that people who live in the United States should be equal. They should be free to marry whosoever they want.
After couples have their children, they do not know how to teach them to be respectful. However, many parents who have the experience can teach them the golden rule. For instance, when I was a child, my parents usually taught me to speak politely to others. After I saw the neighbors coming out on the streets, my parents would tell me to say “Hello” to them. In addition, before I had questions to ask someone, my parents also taught me to say “Excuse me.” Many American couples also teach their children in the same way. When I took a walk in a park, I saw an American child helping an elder across the street. Then the elder gave some candies to the child in order to appreciate his assistance. After the parents found him, they praised him because he respected the elder and offered help for him. Finally, when a new couple has children, the parents can tell them to teach their children to be polite. Moreover, helping others also lead to show respect to other people. After people help others, other people will also help them when they are needed.
In conclusion, many couples in both countries respect each other in some similar ways following their golden rule. They would not ask each other about their privacy. They also accept each other’s race and whether another is rich or poor, and they give suggestions to the new couples how to teach the golden rule to their kids. For example, the new couples can teach their kids to speak with others in a courteous way in order to show respect. They can tell their kids to help others if they need to. Overall, if people respect others, they will get respect from the people they treat. Moreover, people need to treat other people with courtesy.

Funeral
In the novel Until I Say Good-Bye by Susan Spencer-Wendel, Susan had thought about her funeral so long before she got sick. After her mother attended every funeral, she commented on the number of people in the crowd. Therefore, Susan assumed that there must be some people at her funeral. Susan believed that the worst thing that happened to a human being was to have a child die, so her funeral should be at her parents’ church, where many of their friends could surround them and comfort them. However, Susan was not a Baptist. She had beliefs. She wanted to know what happened after death. Then, she invited First Baptist Church’s pastor, Jimmy Scroggins to her home to explain it. Susan also told her father about it, but her father did not answer her. He just communicated to Pastor Scroggins that he disagreed with Susan’s request. After that, Susan chose to keep the funeral simple. She would show a picture and music slides of her lives that were prepared by with Gwen Berry, a journalist colleague who offered to help her. She would also invite a few friends and her family. Finally, Pastor Scroggins would pray for Susan, and donate her body to science.
